The village with the name of water spring has its origin in a hill, Los Villares, where 2,700 years ago the Iberians built a fortified city, Kelin, from where they could control the important route between the plateau and the east. Centuries later the population abandoned the hill and relocated next to the spring.
The Fuente Grande and the Fuente Chica, next to the old washhouse, are vestiges of past times. The large houses at the entrance testify to the importance of the village. If you go up the narrow white streets, at the top of the village you can take the road to Fuenterrobles, in this section the GR-7 path, and go up to the Bicuerca. From the top, the panoramic view of the village, presided over by the high tower of the church of the Natividad de Nuestra Señora, is fabulous.
Caudete celebrates San Antón in January, with its bonfire, the "zurra" and the "puñaillo", and Carnivals in February. In June, San Antonio de Padua, the town's patron saint, is honoured.
