La Villa District

The last archaeological activities carried out date the population to the Iron Age. Dwellings, amphorae and vessels have been found from the 7th century BC. The history of La Villa is long and remains from its Roman and Arab Imperial periods have also been found.

Already in the Almohad period, the Barrio de La Villa had the typical structure of the Hispanic-Muslim cities, with several access points to the medieval quarter. In the Barrio de la Villa we can highlight, for its historical and artistic interest, different monuments and buildings.

Among them we can admire the neoclassical church of San Nicolás, the gothic churches of Santa María and del Salvador, the Homage Tower, the Fortaleza, the Silk Museum House, the Palacio del Cid, the Museum of Contemporary Art "Florencio de la Fuente", the Jewish Quarter and the Caves of the Villa.

The neuralgic centre of the district has been represented, since the 16th century, by the Plaza de la Villa, now called Plaza de Albornoz.
