Walking through history

This land has been inhabited for millennia. Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Christians have all left their mark. We walk where they all walked.

Our origins

The sites of Kelin, El Molón or Las Pilillas tell us about fortified Iberian settlements, winemaking and trade with the Plateau and the Mediterranean.

The protective Virgin

Throughout the region there is a devotion to the Virgen del Remedio. The Utielans take her down in a pilgrimage from the sanctuary to Utiel on September 6, and return her on the last Sunday in October. The faithful from Requena visit her on Easter Sunday.

Our musical tradition

Music bands accompany us in important moments and are part of our identity as Valencians. 13 musical groups are considered Intangible Cultural Assets.

A gothic jewel

The Gothic doorway of the Annunciation, in the Church of Santa Maria in Requena, is worth the trip to Requena in itself. A marvel presided over by the Virgin and child, surrounded by angels.

This is how we were

Until recently, you could see mules and horses in the street and life was lived around a table in the kitchen. In Sisternas, Fuenterrobles, Utiel or Sinarcas we preserve factories, houses, furniture and tools of the past so as not to lose our memory.

Our culture is the great monuments, the hollows of our land, our customs and festivals. Stones and silk, walls and castles and also tunnels and caves. We have been here before there was any history. Iberians, Romans and Arabs passed through here. We have sanctuaries, gothic, baroque and neoclassical churches, and also hermitages in beautiful places. There is even a mosque. Ancient wine presses that remind us that we have always been wine, and also mills, factories, presses and looms. A heritage of great and small things, a legacy that can be felt and that is not always touched. We go on pilgrimages, light fires for San Antón and sing the Mayos. And the music band, always with us.

The aim of the Bobal Territory Association is to promote the culture of wine in the region and to contribute to the construction of our future. With the "Wine in Iberia" project, it has managed to get the cave presses of the Iberian period located in Requena, such as the Solar de las Pilillas, to appear on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. All the social sectors of the region are involved in this project, from the local administrations and the business network to the civil society. The main impetus is provided by the Mancomunidad del Interior Tierra del Vino and the Regulatory Council of the DO Utiel-Requena.

We have a long story to tell you...

...because, century after century, we remain attached to the earth

2,500 years of history

The first settlers of these lands arrived in the Iron Age, in the 7th century BC. Throughout the territory there are Iberian, Roman, Muslim and Christian remains, which built settlements, castles, walled cities, farmhouses, churches, mosques, bridges, tunnels, towers, corrals and factories. From our Iberian ancestors you will find El Molón, in Camporrobles, with one of the best preserved walls in Spain; Kelin, in Caudete de las Fuentes, a magnificent city that was abandoned after the Roman conquest; and Solana de las Pilillas, where a wine press was found, the first wine cellar in the Iberian Peninsula.

The traditions

Our calendar is the calendar of the fields. The harvest marks the main festive event of the year. First, the Requena Grape Harvest Festival at the end of August, followed by the Utiel Fair, which begins the first weekend of September with the descent of the Virgen del Remedio. The towns and villages celebrate their patron saint festivals, and the traditional summer festivals. Throughout the region, the young build bonfires for San Antón. San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers, has his feast day in May. And we also preserve traditions -almost lost- such as the Mayos, which in the early morning of May 1st are sung to the single girls in Camporrobles, Chera, Venta del Moro and the villages of Jaraguas, Hortunas, Los Duques and in Las Casas, where they sing to the Virgin.

Surprising museums

Artistic creation is the legacy that man leaves to future generations along with his knowledge. We have preserved our cultural heritage in museums and private collections throughout Tierra Bobal. Ancient castles, convents, palaces or factories that today have a new life dedicated to archaeology, the silk industry, contemporary art, wine, photography or molluscs. Although our favourite museums are those that show how our elders lived. In Sisternas, Fuenterrobles or Sinarcas you will find collections of furniture, utensils, tools, ornaments, clothes and tools donated by the neighbours themselves so that their memory is not forgotten.
